I belong to the American Association of Grant Professionals (AAGP) and the new local chapter (Nevada Grant Professionals Association). Since we just formed a few months ago, the chapter wanted to create a website. They wanted to call it NGPA.org, but National Gay Pilots Association beat them to the punch.

“Instead of using an acronym in the URL that may be good for members but not for those searching online, how about using keywords ‘Grants’ and ‘Nevada’?” I thought. So, I purchased the domain name GrantsNevada.com and followed the basic steps in setting up the site.

It took me 30 minutes to do the initial setup: install WordPress, set up a new user, activate Akismet to protect the site from spammers, customize the URLs for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), add a tagline, delete default links, and install the premium theme (my favorite is Thesis) and the most important plugins.

When the time was right, I donated the site to the chapter. I even filled out the “in-kind contribution voucher” to write off the donation on my taxes.

I also agreed to train others from the chapter interested in creating their own websites/blogs or at least contributing to our new site. Did you know you can write off the time you spend training?

Here’s a summary the 3 steps I used to set up, prepare & provide the 1st basic WordPress/Thesis training  for GrantsNevada.com … [click to continue…]
